And a Happy New Year

December 31, 2009 evoljennifer Leave a comment

Of course I had to get a blog post in before the end of the year. I thought I would do this instead of sending out the holiday letter. The holiday letter is a good tradition as it makes you sit down and review the past year.

The big trend I resisted this year with regard to blogging was the fact that people kept saying, ‘people don’t blog, they micro-blog now.’ I was resistant. I kept saying, ‘it’s not true!’ Well, it happened to me. I saw my behavior change. I used Twitter more and more – pretty much daily – and left my blog behind more often than I would have liked. But this is a guilt free zone, I’m mainly just observing the behavior.

The year was full of lots of adventure. It was a year of planning. We created plans for a house remodel. I created plans for the next IA Summit in Phoenix. I created plans for how I want to grow with EightShapes. I created plans for how I want to grow my photography work. On all fronts things have moved forward. It’s been kind of insane-but that is life and it’s about living it.

January was a big month. We started Gumption, LLC. After one year of being a co-owner, it’s been easy to see that we should have done this a long time ago. Even though I took a job with EightShapes later in the year, I’m still part of Gumption doing my photo work.

February was spent planning and preparing for the IA Summit and lining up all kinds of speaking sessions for the spring. It was a big year for ’social media’ and I got out there trying to help ‘demystify’ some things for people. It struck me that I was seeing the cycle in play. 10 years ago people were experiencing the same level of overwhelmedness about the Internet. You’ve seen what the past ten years have brought. In ten years, ’social media’ won’t be something we talk about just another way that humans connect.

March was the big IA Summit. Memphis was the city. Graceland was the fun activity. The rest was all about meeting peers, colleagues, co-conspirators and coming together to learn and share. The Peabody hotel in Memphis was a beautiful and amazing place. It allowed all the IA people to gather in the lounge before and after dinner and during breaks. It was an amazing experience to be on the other side of the event as well as I stepped in to help Samantha Bailey who was the 2009 IA Summit Chair person.

April was a whirlwind of speaking about social media, supporting clients and recovering from the IA Summit. However, recovery did not last too long as planning for 2010 needed to get started.

May brought on changes as well. A trip to San Fransisco for Google I/O and visiting San Fransisco friends. Another very exciting change: EightShapes offered me a full time job and I officially joined ranks.

June-September – well it was summer and it was as usual a great few months of epic dog walks, long days and all the joys of summer.

In September, after a trip to Chicago to hang out with the lovely and amazing Tesia, I attended the IA  Institute IDEA conference for the first time. It was exciting to finally make it to the event after years of not being able to go. I like the format and found it to be a lovely and intimate setting to meet up with colleagues, learn and discuss.

October brought one of my most exciting events of the year. The Photography Salon that I attend, hosted by local Minneapolis photography artist Wing Young Huie, put on a show. 23 Salon members gathered on a Saturday to hang our work. A week later we gathered and welcomed the public to an opening that brought out over 500 people. The show hung for a month. It was an incredibly important milestone for me in my artistic photography career.

Experimental Alice Photos

November and December brought the rush of holiday and family and crossing things off to-do lists. The end of the year is a marker and it makes us do crazy things for closure, for renewal, to give us a sense of a fresh start.

The end of a year. The end of a decade. I’m looking very forward to the ’10’s.

Happy New Year + New Decade World! Let’s use all this new-fangled fancy technology to do some good in the upcoming decade and beyond. That is my wish for the world.

Peace out.

Digtial DNA

What does your persona look like online? A nifty web tool goes out to find all the references to your name and creates a digital DNA. The one challenge is that all the people that share your name get grouped into it. I happen to be lucky as I have not found another Jennifer Bohmbach who has a web foot print. Don’t Box My Twitter In – Rules vs Play

August 22, 2009 evoljennifer 4 comments

A few recent Twitter posts from different places led me to expand on my thoughts around the ‘rules’ of social media. I experienced several instances where I wanted to respond to a tweet about ‘rules’ and I could never fit my response in to 140 characters. I finally thought, right-that’s what my blog is for-things that need more than 140 characters. :)

An article that my friend and colleague, Fred Beecher wrote for Johnny Holland magazine brings home the point that even though the iPhone as a device is not as usable as one would suspect, it it fun. Related to this notion of fun, we need to be allowed to play with Twitter.

Lately, I’ve seen many people tweeting about twitter rules. There are things people don’t like about the behavior of others and so they complain about it. But instead of acknowledging that these could be valid evolutionary uses of the tool, they call the uses out as wrong. I don’t think that is helpful. I also wouldn’t stop those people as this complaining in and of itself is a valid use of Twitter.

What am I talking about?

If you don’t use Twitter, this might be hard to understand. Fair warning.

I also want it to be clear that I’m not talking about people being called out for behavior that is otherwise socially unacceptable, such as death threats. Nor and I talking about things that might not be so wise such as ‘drunk tweeting’. I am also not talking about the rules that the Twitter service defines.

I’m talking about why I think it’s too early for people to define the rules of usage.

FACT ONE: Microblogging is a form of communication that has just entered our lives.

Creating too many rules about how to use a form of communication in its genesis doesn’t seem wise.

FACT TWO: Twitter, a tool to participate in Microblogging, is falsely constrained to 140 characters.

The designers could have easily chosen other limitations, but this is what they chose. In my experience with people-forcing them to be concise is a good thing. If we aren’t forced, we tend to be lazy or fast-which always create communication that is less clear. If it’s 140 characters, it’s hard to fit it in, therefore we need to think a little harder about what we are saying.

FACT THREE: People are using microblogging in new ways every day.

New uses inspire new ideas. We want to reach out to each other, it’s fun to figure out ways to share. The platform enables the connection, but the connections are undefined. We’ve never had the ability to be connected like this before. How we interact is a big part of allowing the growth.

FACT FOUR: Defining rules can cut off discovery.

Are we really ready to do that this soon? I for one am not interested in being boxed in by what others have found to be useful. We should share what has worked for us, but encourage discovery.

FACT FIVE: Humans don’t like change.

This is probably why when new things come along we want to put rules on them.

FACT SIX: The Internet has changed everything.

This is another reason I think rules may be of comfort. If a new thing comes along and you don’t understand it, it is preferable to begin to define it. This definition makes it less scary, less intimidating and less of a threat.

FACT SEVEN: Most rules are ACTUALLY preferences.

The rules I’ve seen espoused are mostly preferences. Since it is a personal medium, you may or may not like what others do or say. It is up to you to take action based on you. For example, perhaps someone you subscribe to on Twitter tweets too much at a conference, that isn’t really their problem, it is yours. You are free to unsubscribe from them.

FACT EIGHT: Most blog posts about Twitter rules are actually posts about breaking the rules.

When I did some further research on this, I found that searching for the rules only ended up bringing me to places that talked about the rules and ‘why I break them’.

While I understand the need in our human nature to create rules of engagement, I think this shifting social paradigm is too new & too nebulous to box in.

What do you think?

Podcasting: Coming Soon

I restarted my Poem of the Week Series recently and I realized, I needed a better system to produce it. So, I am working with Garrick next week to set that up. I will be broadcasting soon. Excited to get help from one of the best. :)

Week Two

June 8, 2009 evoljennifer 1 comment

<img_2086smallToday was my second Monday at my new job. I’m getting into the swing of my new ritual. A new schedule brings the possibilities of other types of discipline in my life. For example, the fact that I haven’t blogged since May 20th! What’s up with that?

Anyway, on the other side of a transition now, I’m feeling much more organized, which in turn makes me feel much more relaxed. It’s good to know these things about yourself and best not to learn them the hard way. :)

Star Trek Lessons

I saw the latest Star Trek movie on Saturday. The great and talented J.J. Abrahms really hit it. I thought the actors did an amazing job of embodying the original characters.

As I was thinking about the movie later, I thought it had some lessons to share. I wondered if any of my Twitter friends would agree, so I started a tweet chain.

I’m sure you can think of your own. Leave in the comments or go ahead and Tweet it and I’ll add you later. Use the #startreklessons tag so I can find you.

Poem of the Week: Season Two – Episode 3

This week the Poem is titled, “Ode to Bea”. It’s funny what seeps into our consciousness when we are young. People don’t get enough poems written about them these days. When Bea Arthur recently passed away I decided to use my new found POTW energy and dedicate some of it to her memory.
